PINEL ASPD GENEALOGY CASE STUDY

Once upon a time, I crossed the pathway of a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist in question has practiced in the domain long before the era of globalization and widespread use of technology. He portrays the man summoned for expertise judgment in Crime & Law cases. I was wondering if there is truth in the maxim "The line that distinguishes stupidity and brilliance is that the latter sets limits".

I asked: «Why study medicine and specifically psychiatry?»

He responded: «I root from ancestors who have contributed significantly to the medical field. For many generations, there was always at least one offspring dedicated to studying medicine. Hectic medical work schedules often leave little room to foster other talents. My parents would discuss their work at home to decompress. My mother was gifted in languages and writing. She was very strict and would make me take dictations at a very early age. I became intrigued by my father's work in asylums during an era where people with mental illnesses were called the incurables or the aliens. Back in the day, prejudice towards people living with mental illnesses was omnipresent in various cultures regardless the country. I noticed there was a lot of potential in the field of psychiatry in terms of scientific discovery. My parents were exemplary citizens so I wanted to continue their legacy.»

I asked: «Any misconceptions about your profession?»

He responded: «There are many philosophical schools related to the field of psychiatry. In other words, it takes 1 psychiatrist in a committee of 10 psychiatrists to cast doubt about a prognosis. There are many misconceptions in my domain: people think we practice psychiatry to use mentally disabled people as guinea pigs, people might believe we are dark sordid medical professionals attempting to create supervillain or superhero creatures, or we are smart people who made it to medical school but are fundamentally anarchists. In reality, psychiatrists are normal people who aim to help people.»

I asked: «Who is Pinel?»

He responded: «Philippe Pinel portrays the pioneer of modern psychiatry. He succeeded in reforming psychiatry by classifying mental illnesses and prompted the humanization of treatments by liberating patients from chains and other objects used to constrain patients slaved in hospital beds or wards. He instigated a vision which was the humanization of people with mental disorders.»

I asked: «What is ASPD?»

He responded: «ASPD depicts an acronym for antisocial personality disorder. It classifies mental pathologic disorders. The following are some traits linked to ASPD: people who lie so much that they eventually mistaken lies for reality, behave impulsively without considering the risks of their actions, inapt at recognizing health and safety concerns for their own well-being and the well-being of others, they are apathic towards others, they claim ownership of other people, view other people as things rather than human beings, pretend to be someone else, are mostly concerned about what makes them happy, seek to maximize self-satisfaction, address conflicts with melodrama, can have many sexual partners and disregard concerns about unprotected sex or conception, try to reduce the consequences of their actions by attempting to say that they are actors in a profession or an activity, replicate the same mistakes over and over, have limited long-term memory, appear as narcissists but believe they are the victim, can be lazy or adversely hyperactive but in both ways are unproductive, have trouble in their life and expect others to clean up their mess or take responsibility on their behalf, they have better relationships with similar degree ASPD folks because they share complicity however have few relationships with people not attained of ASPD.»

I asked: «Are there various levels of ASPD?»

He responded: «Yes! I have seen people with mild ASPD who remain in control of their life. In other words, mild ASPD people generally do not lose control. In fact, doctors and many other professional occupations might have people with mild ASPD. Powerful people high the world can be people with mild ASPD just like small people down the ladder. There are also other levels called low-functioning or borderline.»

I asked: «What is your estimate of people living with ASPD?»

He responded: «In my personal view, 15% to 25% of people living in industrialized developed countries have ASPD traits.»

I asked: «Are people living with ASPD considered sociopath or psychopath?»

He responded: «No! The audience and society as a whole often mix up psychiatric terminology and that can be dangerous. Sociopaths and psychopaths are two distinct mental health conditions. ASPD are not the underlying cause of these two mental health conditions but are perceived as traits examined in people suffering from these mental health conditions.»

I asked: «Does ASPD impact a specific social class?»

He responded: «No! All social rankings are impacted including all genders. Research has also proven that ASPD exists in emerging, developing and developed countries.»

I asked: «Is ASPD genetically transmitted?»

He responded: «No! I consider that ASPD are traits however genetic scientific research has proven that some mental health disorders such as autism, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are directly linked to genetics. There are also other mental health disorders linked to genetics but the environment and lifestyle play a contributing role in the development of mental illnesses.»

I asked: «Can people with ASPD live normal lives?»

He responded: «Yes! Most people with ASPD are functional in society. Those with severe ASPD cases represent a very low percentage in a normal population bell curve.»

I asked: «Can people with ASPD be influenced by others or adversely manipulate others?»

He responded: «Yes! Some people with ASPD traits are inapt at recognizing that others might be using them to advance their cause or adversely might use others to gain something in return.»

I asked: «How about fame?»

He responded: «People with ASPD traits and without ASPD traits can search or not search for fame. Some people become famous without looking for fame. Sometimes, fame comes accidentally or sometimes people seek fame. People with ASPD traits might believe they are a superior breed or special.»

I asked: «How about the maxim "The line that distinguishes stupidity and brilliance is that the latter sets limits"?»

He responded: «I agree with the aphorism because a smart person sets limits before it goes too far while the stupid person acts without thinking.»

I asked: «Are you doomed if you come from a mentally limited background?»

He responded: «No! There are many factors involved in the process of evaluating someone's intelligence. Often, there is prejudice and desire to classify people in categories.»

I asked: «How about a case study provided by J.A.W.?»

case study

He responded: «The subject in question is J.A.W.. How J.A.W. became intellectually more accomplished compared to a good chunk of people in society depicts another case study as a whole. J.A.W.'s future is classified because her safety was compromised. J.A.W. had a hard-time with people in society and it eventually impacted her physical and mental health. J.A.W. cut ties a long time ago with all entities in the tree. How has J.A.W proven to be brilliant against all other entities in the tree? She does not speak about them in public and ensures that she does not replicate their behavior. Sometimes, it is better to denude oneself in public to halt the game. She has neither given anyone consent to speak nor act on her behalf. J.A.W has a right to exist on her terms. She also respects the tree's right to exist as well. She expects society to treat all entities with dignity and respect. The concept also applies to all individuals resurrecting from J.A.W.'s previous lives.»

I asked: «What is your input regarding the current turmoil in the Arabian Peninsula?»

He responded: «As a psychiatrist, I will keep it short and simply say that I see mental distress on both sides but I am concerned about the proportion of individuals in distress. On the one side, the new country still has a medical infrastructure that can provide mental resources to those in need. On the other side, the medical facilities are demolished and there is a very large proportion of individuals who not only have nowhere to go but also do not have access to mental aid facilities. So, I am profoundly concerned.»

I concluded: «Thanks for a wonderful lesson in Pinel ASPD Genealogy Case Study!»
